The weather: hot, humid, gorgeous water

Hurricane season honesty: this window sits in the most active stretch of the season (the climatological peak is Sept 10). Odds are the weekend is fine, but start watching the National Hurricane Center about a week out. Gulf storms can develop fast, and rental refund policies for storms vary, so if you want cancellation coverage, buy travel insurance before anything gets a name.

Reading the beach flags

PCB flies a flag system on every public beach, and it has teeth: swimming during double red is a fine of up to $1,000. Text PCBFLAGS to 888777 any morning for the day's flag.

Crowds: we picked a quiet one

Around Top of the Gulf

We're on the quieter east end of the beach, on Thomas Drive near Grand Lagoon, about 15 to 20 minutes from Pier Park but with plenty within a few minutes.

Walkable

  • The beach: it's directly out back
  • Emerald Falls mini golf and go-karts, about a 10 minute walk
  • Ripley's Believe It or Not, under a mile at the Thomas Dr / Front Beach Rd corner

Short drive

  • St. Andrews State Park, about 3 miles east: the prettiest beach and snorkeling in PCB
  • Publix at 2419 Thomas Dr, 5 to 10 minutes, for stocking the kitchenette
  • Pier Park shopping and restaurants, 15 to 20 minutes (more in beach traffic)
  • Shipwreck Island Waterpark, a short drive

Breakfast worth leaving the beach for

  • Thomas Donut and Snack Shop, 7328 Thomas Dr, a PCB institution
  • Fatty Patty's, 2705 Thomas Dr
  • Gypsea Crepes, 7012 Thomas Dr
  • Taylor's Breakfast and Lunch, Liza's Kitchen Café

Getting around

  • Condo parking is usually one vehicle per unit with a pass; bring one car if possible
  • Thomas Drive moves better than Front Beach Rd during beach rush; Back Beach Rd (US-98) is the bypass
  • Public beach lots are paid via the Passport Parking app
  • Friday check-in evening and Saturday midday are the heaviest traffic windows

One to verify with the host before we drive over: how many parking passes unit 818 gets, since most buildings on this strip cap it at one per unit.
